Some of My Maritime Work
During the past 30 years, I have worked extensively as Master aboard a variety of vessels operating throughout the Pacific Northwest coast and as far as the Mediterranean, North Sea, Caribbean and Hawaiian Islands. I have intimate knowledge of Southeast Alaska and B.C. coastal waters including the Queen Charlotte Islands. During these years I have never spent less than 100 days per year on the water and as much as 300.
It is not possible to recount the hundreds of individual trips / deliveries I've done over the years, but I will include a few examples of how I've spent my career in order to give you an idea of my versatility:
| As a skipper I have operated a 300' four masted sailing vessel, S.V. Legacy with up to 128 passengers. I was responsible for a 55-man crew plus administering monthly budget of $110,000. I was responsible for daily maneuvers throughout the year without pilots, tugs, or thrusters. I visited most Windward and Leeward Islands and Barbados as well as guided the ship through USPH, USCG and ABS inspections as well as all external and internal audits. | ![]() |

As skipper for "Orca Spirit Adventures" in Victoria, B.C., I operated a 40' high speed (45 knot) whale watching vessel, with 1000 hp engines and surface piercing drives capable of carrying 40 passengers. |
| As skipper of a 68' motor sailer Island Roamer on four to eleven day cruises throughout coastal waters of B.C. and U.S. from the San Juan Islands well into Southeast Alaska. I was responsible for the safety and comfort of sixteen passengers and a crew of four along with all aspects of navigation, pilotage and the mechanical and electrical systems of the vessel during these trips. In this position I have also gained extensive experience in operating the vessel in ice in Southeast Alaska. | ![]() |

Delivered the sailing vessel Ocean Light II, an Ocean 71' from Cabo San Lucas to Vancouver, B.C. in February. I was responsible for the safety of an amateur crew of three as well as all aspects of planning, navigation and safety of the crew and vessel. Despite heavy weather, yacht was delivered on schedule and on budget. |
| Owner / operator of a 38' commercial fishing vessel, Two Sisters. I have fished primarily for salmon off the north and west coasts of the Queen Charlotte Islands, as well as many other areas between Swiftsure Bank and Cape Muzon and almost anywhere in between. Employed one to three deckhands each season. I was responsible for all aspects of the business. | ![]() |
| I have also taken delivery of a 72' converted (for salvage) North Sea Trawler from Dundee, Scotland through the Caledonian Canal to Falmouth, Cornwall. I oversaw the further conversion work and delivered the vessel via Lisbon and Gibraltar to Lebanon. | |

During the years between 1972 and 1984 I lived almost exclusively aboard my boat, a Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter. I made many trips on my own boat as well as delivering other boats across the English Channel and the Irish Sea, to France, Holland and Ireland. In 1987 I sailed the vessel, a gaff cutter (without benefit of an engine) from Cornwall to the West Indies via Madeira and the Canary Islands. In the following two years I worked and chartered on the island of St. Barts and on the Leeward Islands, and then continued through the Panama Canal to Hawaii and then to Vancouver, British Columbia. |
